Stop a dangerous bill that could wipe out animal cruelty laws
A monumental threat is facing animals in our country! Legislation pending in the U.S. Congress could be disastrous for animals.
This year has been historic for animals, with the Supreme Court of the United States upholding the strongest farm animal protection law in the country, California’s Proposition 12. But this hasn't stopped lobbyists for the pork industry who have turned to Congress, pushing for federal legislation to undo not just Proposition 12, but potentially any state sales regulation aimed at addressing animal welfare or a host of other concerns.
The so-called “Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression” (EATS) Act (S. 2019/H.R. 4417) is designed to wipe out state laws that ban the sale of products from cruelly confined egg-laying chickens, mother pigs and veal calves. If passed, it could also destroy hundreds of other laws aimed at terrible cruelties, like the abuse of dogs in puppy mills. But it doesn’t end there. State laws on a vast range of additional concerns are also at risk, including pesticide application on fields, arsenic in food, protection against lead poisoning, pollution standards for spraying sewage on crops, and child labor. Animals (and people) need your help to stop the unraveling of even the most basic protections.
TAKE ACTION
Please make a brief, polite phone call to each of your two U.S. Senators and U.S. Representative now and urge them to oppose the EATS Act. Look up their phone number here. You can simply say, "As your constituent, I urge you to oppose the ‘Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression’ (EATS) Act (S. 2019/H.R. 4417) or anything like it that could wipe out animal protection laws."
