Missouri: Urge your state legislators to oppose SB 937 / HB 2265

Urgent! Dangerous bills that protect and promote cruel puppy mills and their pet store sales outlets have been introduced in the Missouri legislature. They would prevent any local regulation of puppy-selling pet stores, allowing them to sell puppy mill puppies to unsuspecting consumers indefinitely. We need your help to stop them TODAY!

The majority of puppies sold in pet stores come from mills: intensive breeding facilities where there is little concern for the health and well-being of the animals. Families who purchase puppies from stores are often burdened with pet health problems that can cost thousands of dollars in veterinary visits to treat and can lead to a lifetime of medical complications.

SB 937 / HB 2265 are an attack on local governments and animal welfare. The bills protect Petland, a multinational corporation with a cruel business model, at the expense of Missourians. At a time when so many Missouri shelters are overwhelmed, the state should not be forcing communities to accept the import of puppy mill puppies. It seeks to protect a cruel industry while harming animals and consumers who are so often wronged by the puppy-mill-to-pet-store pipeline.

SB 937 / HB 2265 are an attack on local governments and animal welfare. The bills protect Petland, an multinational corporation with a cruel business model,  known for selling sick puppies, using misleading sales tactics and utilizing predatory lending. At a time when so many Missouri shelters are overwhelmed, the state should not be forcing communities to accept the import of puppy mill puppies.

These bills are similar to legislation introduced last year, but now appear to regulate the very industry they protect. These weak and largely unenforceable restrictions will do little to protect animals or consumers and cannot be used to justify robbing local elected officials of their right to protect Missouri pets and families.
