American Kennel Club: Stop protecting puppy mills
Despite the image they try to portray, the AKC is not an animal welfare organization. It is a purebred dog registry sustained by dog registration fees. Because of their financial dependence on commercial breeders, the AKC regularly lobbies against animal welfare bills, including those that would provide protections for dogs in puppy mills. It looks like the AKC is afraid such laws would cut into its profit.
For years, the AKC has aggressively opposed laws and ordinances which aim to protect dogs in puppy mills, combat dogfighting, prevent the sexual abuse of animals, and protect dogs from suffering in extreme temperatures—including the Puppy Protection Act and the Better CARE for Animals Act.
