Ohio: Urge your state representative to support HB 443

The majority of puppies sold in pet stores come from mills: intensive breeding facilities where there is little concern for the health and well-being of the animals. Families who purchase puppies from stores are often burdened with pet health problems that can cost thousands of dollars in veterinary visits to treat and can lead to a lifetime of medical complications.

HB 443 will restore the right of local elected officials to crack down on the puppy mill-to-pet store pipeline by repealing the law that bans localities from enacting local pet store ordinances. Ohioans are suffering because of this preemption law, which allows puppy-selling pet stores to operate without any meaningful regulation and protects corporations like Petland that sell sick puppy mill puppies to Ohioans. HB 443 will right this wrong by allowing localities in our state to crack down on pet stores that operate in an inhumane or deceptive manner.
