New York: Urge Gov. Hochul to sign the Horseshoe Crab Protection Act
Horseshoe crabs have existed for over 400 million years, enduring some of Earth’s greatest changes. However, today their populations are facing a serious decline, largely due to biomedical and commercial harvesting practices. The Horseshoe Crab Protection Act (A.10140/S.3185A) will help protect horseshoe crabs from further exploitation by prohibiting companies from using these amazing living fossils as bait or draining their blood for biomedical testing. The good news is that synthetic, non-animal testing methods are already available and have been proven to be just as effective at detecting harmful substances in drugs and vaccines as horseshoe crab blood.
Without the passage of this bill, New York’s horseshoe crabs could continue to face overharvesting. Neighboring states like Connecticut, New Jersey and Massachusetts have already implemented similar protections. It’s time for New York to join other states in protecting these remarkable animals and the delicate ecosystem of the Atlantic coast.
