A puppy in a cage

You love helping animals.
So do we.

Puppy mills are inhumane dog breeding facilities that churn out puppies for profit. A mother dog in a puppy mill is bred constantly, having litter after litter for years without ever being let out of her small, filthy cage. Together, we can end this cruelty.

Chuck Cook/For the HSUS 2013

Help put an end to puppy mill cruelty.

Puppies from puppy mills are taken from their mothers and sold online, through local ads, or in pet stores, where many of them die from treatable illnesses, scared and alone. Or the sick puppies are sold to unsuspecting customers, who will be burdened with expensive veterinary bills to save the life of their new puppy.

The HSUS takes a stand against puppy mills on all possible levels, including supporting legislative changes, conducting investigations, and promoting public awareness and education. Working with local authorities, we help shut down the most abusive puppy mills.

The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s most effective animal protection organization. Together with our supporters, we are fighting cruelty and improving the lives of animals all over the world. Please donate to help.

ABOUT THE HSUS

The Humane Society of the United States earns a top four-star rating from Charity Navigator, which reports that “you can give with confidence,” and is approved by the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance for all 20 of its standards for charity accountability, which address charity governance, finances, effectiveness reporting, appeal accuracy, website disclosures and donor privacy.

The HSUS has Guidestar’s Platinum Seal of Transparency for providing donors with information on our strategic plan, impact, leadership demographics and other metrics. Founded in 1954, we fight the big fights to end suffering for all animals. Along with our supporters and volunteers, we work to pass anti-cruelty laws, promote humane eating, help animals in captivity and bring veterinary services to pets in underserved communities. Along with our affiliates, we care for more than 100,000 animals each year through our rescue teams, sanctuaries and wildlife centers.

You can join the fight in so many ways! Here are a few suggestions.

  • Make sure your pet always wears an I.D. tag.
  • Prepare a disaster plan that includes your pet.
  • Contact local law enforcement if you witness animal abuse.
  • Make sure your pet is spayed or neutered, and consider adopting your next animal—you could save a life!
  • Help stop the export of American horses for slaughter for human consumption—ask your Congressional representatives to support the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act.
  • Refine your diet by avoiding factory farmed animal products and including more plant-based options on your plate.
  • Put your skills and talents to work for animals by volunteering with us.

Local humane societies, shelters, rescues and SPCAs are independent entities; they are not run by the HSUS or any other national entity. They have their own policies, governance and operational priorities. We support local organizations in many ways, but we primarily run our own programs to care for animals in crisis and fight the root causes of animal cruelty—large-scale work that’s beyond the scope of smaller organizations and agencies. Read more about how we support local shelters and work alongside them on many crucial issues.

The Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates spend nearly 71% of all gifts directly on lifesaving animal protection programs, while the remaining funds help maintain our infrastructure and operations. Like any nonprofit organization, the HSUS carries out marketing, fundraising and public awareness programs designed to reach the public, grow our membership and influence key decision-makers in the public and private sectors.

Our program-to-fundraising ratios compare favorably with those of other charities in the nonprofit sector. The Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance recommends that charities spend at least 65% of their expenses on program activities. Supporters and others can view the breakdown of our spending ratios and the work made possible by their donations in our annual reports and financial statements.
